The Jelastic Spotlight: Javier Ortiz and

| August 3, 2012

This week's Spotlight comes to you from Spain! It's a little short, but what our interviewee is doing is pretty cool. They have built a collaborative teaching and learning platform to facilitate the educational process across geographic lines.

Remember, if you know of someone that is doing cool stuff and is using Jelastic, let us know! We would love to chat with them and showcase their work, here on the blog. If you know of someone that is doing cool stuff but has not tried Jelastic out, tell them about us!

Javier Ortiz and

Hey, Javier. Where are you and your team based?

My partner and I are based in Madrid, Spain.

What's your background?

I've been programming last 20 years. And I've been using Java as long as I can remember. I know it quite well, and I feel comfortable in those development frameworks.

What's your role at your startup?

I'm the co-founder and CTO. I still stay busy coding though. My co-founder is Curro Gutierrez.

Before this, what were you doing?

I'm a serial entrepreneur. I love being in the middle of it all. Before Tutellus, I founded a company focused on the development of agile technologies. I've also worked quite a bit on R&D projects for bigger companies, like Telefonica. I love teaching and sharing my knowledge of Java and all things techie.

Can you tell us a little about the app that you have running on Jelastic? is a collaborative platform for teaching and learning about anything, anywhere. Our goal is to transform educational structures through a more flexible, user focused and on-demand service. We're running in Spain and plan to expand to other countries soon.

We've deployed a web app with a mySQL DB and a Tomcat server. We developed the front-end with Twitter Bootstrap over Grails and we have dozens of web services completely integrated.

Currently running class: "An Intensive Course in Urban Photography"

So, how does Jelastic fit into your business plan?

From the moment that we first heard about it, we liked it: the simplicity of deployment for servers and services is what we really liked. What really convinced us thought was how easy it was to scale. The easy of use and how easy it was do turn things like the balancer on and off. That and the growing number of supported services are what attracted us to Jelastic.

With Jelastic, we can have fast and effective results in a very cost-effective way.

What are your plans for the future with respect to your application?

We're developing a lot of new services. We'll soon introduce some more awesome online classes both for our teachers and the students. Our traffic consumption is growing quickly and our metrics are improving. So we are happy about that and confident to have all of our services running on the Jelastic platform. We've already been covered a number of times as part of growing group of "trendsetters" in the education space and are really excited about the future.

Last question: do you have a favorite hobby?

Team sports is where it's at: Paddle, Squash and others 🙂

Thanks for your time.
