Software Stacks Market Share: March 2013

Every month we provide you with stats on the usage and popularity of different software stacks within Jelastic PaaS. It’s time to update you with last month stats. With over 40,000 developers now using Jelastic, we are getting better and better source for measuring the popularity of stacks which are used in the environments these developers have created in Jelastic. This time it’s even more interesting, because starting from our latest release we support the most advanced database in the SQL world - MariaDB 10.0 and one more enterprise-ready server - TomEE. So, let's see how things have been changed!


Below it is presented the popularity of MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, CouchDB and MariaDB 10.0 among developers on Jelastic in March 2013. As you see the leader is the same. Our new database MariaDB 10.0 got a very good piece of pie: 4% for the first time.

If we look at the database popularity by region, there are big differences between database popularity in different countries. For example, MySQL is much more popular in the US comparing with its percentage in Brazil.

Java application servers

As you can see, Tomcat 7 is the number one as usual, but this month it has lost some ground: a 7% decrease over February. The newcomer in this competition TomEE has even exceeded our expectations, it almost overtakes Jetty.

PHP application servers

There are no changes in PHP application servers popularity comparing with the previous month. Apache is leading the competition with 66% of a share.

Java Versions

Though the usage of Java 7 still remains a bit higher than Java 6.

Looking by region, we see even higher penetration of Java 7 in our deployment in Russia.

PHP Versions

Finally, let's see the PHP version distribution for March 2013. Version 5.4 continues to lead.


It's interesting to note that in Russia, the popularity of PHP 5.4 is much higher than in other countries.
