Jelastic Newsletter – February 1, 2012
January is over and it’s February already! The last month flew by. They say that time flies when you are having fun. It must be true.
Dr. Dobb’s Interview (JRuby in Jelastic)
We had a chance to sit with Adrian from Dr. Dobb’s and talk about the full support of JRuby within Jelastic. You can read the interview here. With Jelastic, running your JRuby application is really easy.
You already know that Jelastic supports any JVM-based app. This includes Java 6 and 7, Scala and Groovy. With JRuby you can embed the interpreter into any Java app and get communication between the Java and Ruby codes. If you are a Ruby developer, you have to try this. Your life just got a whole lot easier. If you want to see how easy it really is to get JRuby applications up and running, you can check the how-to here.
Java App Server Market Share
As Jelastic continues to grow (we now have over 7,500 users!), we are becoming a better and better resource for trends within the Java developer community. This month
we saw a growth in Jetty’s usage. A 4% increase over its usage in December. If you keep in mind that the Jelastic user base also grew by over 2,000 users in that time, then you see that Jetty’s usage grew quite a bit.
Tomcat 7 and GlassFish’s percentage stayed close to the same, while Tomcat 6 continued to drop. It would seem that people are leaving Tomcat 6 for Tomcat 7 and Jetty.
The Cost of High Availability
It wasn’t that long ago that we made one-click HA
an option within the control panel. Since we haven’t released pricing yet (Though it’s only a few weeks away!!!), we wanted to let you know how it is that HA works with the different app servers available to you within the control panel. These stats
might help you decide on how or what app server you use.
